Known as the “Humongous Fungus,” this extraordinary organism belongs to the species Armillaria ostoyae. Scientists discovered that its underground network covers an astonishing more than 2,300 acres, making it roughly the size of 1,600 football fields!

But how can a fungus become so enormous?
The answer lies beneath the forest floor. What we commonly recognize as mushrooms are actually only the visible reproductive structures of the fungus. Most of the organism consists of a vast network of thread-like structures called mycelium, which grow through soil and around tree roots.
The Humongous Fungus is believed to have spread gradually through the forest by growing from tree to tree. It can attack and feed on trees, making Armillaria species important forest pathogens.![]() |

Even more fascinating is its age. Scientists estimate that this enormous organism could be thousands of years old. Because much of it remains hidden underground, the fungus can continue expanding without being obvious to people walking through the forest.
So, the next time you see a small mushroom growing on the ground, remember: what you see may be only a tiny part of something much larger hiding beneath your feet.The world's giant organisms aren't always the ones you can see!
